In Search of Amethyst Crystals in Las Vigas, Veracruz

Late Monday afternoon, we left the state of Tlaxcala, and entered the state of Veracruz, making our first stop in Las Vigas, which is home to the mining of very fine amethyst quartz crystals.  We spent the night at a local hotel, and woke Tuesday morning in search of the best way to meet with the miners directly.  Not sure of the condition of the road to the mine, or the safety, we had the good fortune to meet a vendor who sells fruits and vegetables, and travels to the area twice a week.  He just happened to be going that Tuesday, and invited us to ride along,  Now, that's what I call an adventure!  We jumped at this wonderful opportunity, and here I am getting ready to climb in the truck.
In what turned out to be about an 8 hour ride, we made many stops in this beautiful part of the country.  People would appear from their houses when they heard his local music and announcements over the loudspeaker.   "Naranjas, Pina, Chili Verde, Platanos, Diez Pesos".
The kids came running, many with the money their mother gave them to buy the fruit for the family.
The road was gravel, narrow, and curvy, but the views were spectacular.
We got to see a burro with her adorable baby, that we were told was just born the day before.
Spending a day in the life of fruit and vegetable vendor in this remote area was a great gift!  And we were so proud of our effort when we reached the top.
The other reward, of course, was finding the amethyst.  Here are some examples of the crystals that come from Las Vigas.
The valley was stunning as the sun began to set.
And our host continued selling to the local people until well after sunset.  Heading back to the town meant a slightly unnerving ride home on a dark remote road, but we arrived back safe and sound.  We feel so happy and blessed for the many wonderful, generous people we are meeting here in Mexico, and for the great adventures we are so fortunate to experience.

I wish you all sweet dreams, and Buenas Noches.

xoxo Linda
